BRITISH HISTORY
http://www.britishlocalhistory.co.uk/british_local_history.html
It is a fully interactive site where, with your help, we are building a
community of like minded people who can share stories and views on historical topics.
We would like to invite you and your friends/society members to document your own personal stories for others to enjoy and encourage discussions.
We would like to support local groups who are involved with their local community and we will give you web pages on our site for . . .free!!!
What’s the catch? Well, there isn’t one. We simply want to have a site with interesting content for everyone to enjoy,

Common Canadian Surnames
Some great information about Common Canadian Surnames... Also some really good info on Canadian Genealogy in General.
EARLY NZ BOOKS
The NZ Mailing List mentions an
Auckland
University
site where historic texts are being scanned and made available to the public online in a searchable format.
http://www.enzb.auckland.ac.nz/
"Some early
New Zealand
books have been republished over the years but
many are only available in restricted collections. The accounts of early
travellers have been a prime source of information about traditional
Maori society and culture. There is also great interest in accounts of
the earliest British settlements. The ability to search this body of
literature for words and names will be of benefit to both scholars and
genealogists."
"... an index has been constructed to link different spellings of names
and words. This is particularly important for references to personal and
place names in Maori, but also for other attempts to transcribe Maori
words. Variant spellings of English names are also encountered."
The current index (http://www.enzb.auckland.ac.nz/browse.php) indicates
that the collection contains books from 1807 to 1932. (The scary part
isn't how many titles and names I recognise, but how many of those
titles I have on my own bookshelves! :-)
This is a great resource for us, in tandem with
Victoria
University
's
similar project at the NZ Electronic Text Centre (http://www.nzetc.org/).
FAMILY HISTORY HEALTH

FREE NEWSPAPER COLUMN
Shirley voluntarily (that is, for no reimbursement at all) compiles a monthly column called Tracing Your Ancestors in a local
Dunedin
community newspaper.
It usually comprises a small article of local interest, a family photograph, queries from researchers and information about forth-coming genealogy events, reunions, etc.
The service is free and anyone may participate.
Queries should be sent to me at the address below and in general should relate to the Otago and
Dunedin
area.
Please write clearly and PRINT surnames in capital letters. Send clear photograph copies only. Black & white photocopies are not suitable for newspaper reproduction but laser copies are quite cheap and very satisfactory.
Include SAE for a copy of the printed page, for return of photos and for any other information that may arise. If a contact phone number, e-mail, fax addresses and an offer to refund postage or phone costs is included, a reply is more likely to be forthcoming. A good percentage of success has been achieved.
If you belong to a genealogy group you may wish to put this on the
noticeboard.

On the second page,16 maps of post roads from 1778 of mostly Counties Down and Antrim. They are quite detailed and contain detail down to the single house. The towns detailed in the maps are contained in the description, but the title should give you an idea of the route.
Large old maps of Counties Down and Antrim. I'm not sure of their age, I'm guessing late 1800s. but, particularly at larger sizes, you can see a lot of detail.
3 old engravings of
Belfast
. Two are the same except one is a colored version of the other (Belfast Lough from Cave Hill) and the other is
Belfast
from Newtownards (1869).
When you click on one of the images, select "All Sizes" above it to view it at the resolution you like. The larger the size, the more detail you will see.
